New Gallery: Macro

Dear all!

From now on you can visit the new gallery “Macro” where you’ll find a selection of photografies taken using these techniques, that will grow with new photos in the future.

EI20110702-6732

Till now, all the galeries where of the places I have been visiting, and apart from them there were those photos taken near home. It has more sense to join them into a theme gallery. For this reason, the old “Galleries” secction is now divided in two, named “Places” and “Themes“.

I hope I can add new galleries and photos to this new section, quite soon.

I wish you like them and I am looking forward to your comments.

Photo history: The Emerald Jewel

In 2008 I visited Slovenia. I was in the West (Triglav National Park, Julian Alps and the Emerald Route) the South (Karst caves) and two days in the capital, Ljubljana.

What I liked the most was the West: the landscapes, the color of the water at the rivers… I strongly recommend you to visit that area if you love Landscape Photography (or just landscapes).

We were reaching the end of the “Emerald Route” when we found this true “jewel” thanks to Mr. Kolman, our landlord (a really nice man) who recommended us to visit it. The guide we were carrying only mentioned it exists. We would have skip it if he did not recommended it to us.

10 mm, f18, 30sec., ISO 100, polarizer and tripod.

It is the “Slap Kozjak” (Kozjak Waterfall).

The 15 meter high waterfall impresses not for its height but for its beauty. The water has been carving the stone creating a semi-sphere cavity, broken at the top from where the water falls.

The humidity is so high and the dark stones (nearly black) that surround this beauty are covered by a thin green coverage with the water color to match.

I call it “the Emerald Jewel”, because for me, it is a small jewel that saturated my retina of an emerald green, that green that I like so much, that I always keep in my mind and that it gives me a tranquility sensation when I see it again.

Green is one of my favorite colors.  I believe that this is the reason why I specially love this photo and the one of the previous post.

Do you have any color you specially love? Which one?

Photo history: Icelandic horses in the way to Landmannalaugar

This section wants to be a new one at my blog, where I will explain you the history behind a single photo: where I take it and the circumstances around it.

In order to start this section… why not doing it with one of my first photos: Icelandic horses in the way to Landmannalaugar.

1/320 s, f/4,5; ISO 100, 70 mm

If you have a look at the “about me” section, you’ll see that I just started taking nature photos when I took this photo, in July 2007. My first photographic trip was a photographic “workshop” in Iceland, with Iñaki Relanzón, few months after I bought my first digital reflex camera and after doing a weekend course to learn the photographic basics at “Aiguamolls de l’Emporda”, with Iñaki.

We had arrived to Iceland few days before and we were in our way to Landmannalaugar. We had done some stops on that day to take landscape photos and, in one of these stops we were in a narrow place, taking photos. Then a 4WD arrived and stoped, and the people in this vehicle told us to move out of there, because in few minutes a more than 100 horses’ sheep, that they were moving from one place to another, would arrive and, as that place was a narrow one, this could be dangerous for us… Iñaki made us go, and we, resigned, did. We get on the vans and continue our way.

We reached a wide valley and, suddently, Iñaki stopped the van and gave us few instructions to take the horses photos: not to move from the van side as this could be dangerous and… something else that I do not remember now. In few minutes we started seing the horses and my heart started to bit as never… the adrenaline run thru my veins and all my body trembled with the excitement.

As if we were at the American Far-West some (Icelandic) horse riders drived the sheep: some in front, some in the middle and some more at the end. They came troting… fast. When they arrived to the van, the sheep split and some horses went ahead in front of us (so close!) and some more behind the van.

They were 3 intense minutes, between the first and the last photo.

An unforgettable experience!!!

If you’d like that I include in this section a certain photo, do not hesitate to let me know by writting a comment at this blog entry or by using the form.

See you soon!

Happy New Year 2013!!!

2013 has been, in general, a very hard year for everyone. The economical crisis has hit a lot of people who has suffered a lot.

I was lucky as for me it was a year, more or less, like the previous ones but I am aware of what is happening and I am worried about this.

Unfortunately, it does not seem that the situation will change dramatically on 2013 unless we do something.

So, my wishes for next year are that all these people that are in a difficult situation “see a light that guide them” to go away from the situation they are.

What does “the light” mean? The light means a brilliant idea, a continuous effort and a desire stronger than the difficulties. Only with illusion and effort people can go on.

The photo selected to represent this desire was taken last October in Norway: “Aurora Vs. lighting pollution”.

In this photo, the green aurora light competes with the golden colors reflected on the clouds at the background, which are lighting pollution. It also represents the fight between good and evil, the ying and the yang.

I whish that, during 2013, everyone is able to find their “aurora” (green=hope), to go forward, passing over all the issues.

I whish you a Happy 2013!!!

New Gallery: Norway

From now on, you can visit the new gallery: Norway

As I already explained in a previous post, the main objective of this travel was to see and to take photos of the Northern Lights, but we also had time to do other photos and to enjoy the nature.

As it was not too cold (despite of the 20ºC temperature difference with Barcelona, we were most of the time few degrees over 0) we explored the area by ourselves. During the day we drove around searching for prospect places to take the photos, to came back later, at night) . This allowed us to capture the Norwegian Autunm colors and a reindeer group.

Weather conditions were a bit stronger at night (specially on the last days when we reached a few degrees under zero), but they never were extreme: the humidity of the coast or around the lakes and the wind make us feel it was cooler by some degrees, but we were able to stay under those conditions due to the winter clothes we weared.

I recommend, to those that could do it, to go to see the auroras… they are impressive! See how they move and how the fill in the sky, one or more light arches 180º wide, from one side to the other side… it is spectacular, and above all, it’s quite difficult to explain in words.

In the meantime, you can have a look at the selection you’ll find at the Norwegian gallery. I wish you like it.

See you soon!

Norway… Comming soon!

Last October I went to Norway, to the Tromso area, with the objective of seing and taking photos of the Northern Lights.

The Northern Lights welcomed us while we were arriving, at the plane. Amazing!!!! Unfortunately, the sky soon was covered by clouds and continued this way on the following 3 nights. We tried to avoid the clouds, or play with them to do some photos of our main objective.

Rain also accompanied us, but we were lucky to see some reindeers eating grass and drinking water from a lake. The Autumn colors filled in the landscape.

The second half of the week was more productive, with nicer Nothern Lights and with a clearer sky. Then the issue was the lighting pollution that exists close to the coast and some gaming clouds.

The Norway Gallery will be soon available.

In the meantime, please, enjoy the photos that I have included in the initial gallery (home page) and the ones within this text.

See you soon!

New Gallery: U.S.A.

On July this year I have visited some of the Natural Parks of USA at the estates of Arizona, Utah and California: Grand Canyon, Horshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, Arches NP, Brice Canyon NP…

The main goal was to take landscape photographs but on the last 2 days we did a short trip to Monterrey and San Simeón areas (California) to take some fauna photos: seals, sea lions, sea otters and elephant seals.

I have enjoyed the experience and the landscape so much, and I wish you can notice this fact at the photos of the new gallery: U.S.A., that you can visit from now on.

I hope you like them.

Many thanks to all of you that spend some moments looking at my photos.

See you soon!

New Gallery: Bolivia

From now on, you can visit the gallery about Bolivia.

In Bolivia we visited from one hand the Altiplano area (Uyuni Salt Lake and the Eduardo Avaroa Natural Reserve) and from the other the Madidi rainforest. Two really oposite climates.

The Uyuni Salt Lake is the biggest salt lake of the world. As a curiosity, it is used to calibrate the satellits.

Within the Uyuni Salt Lake there is the Incahuasi Island… a ground island in the middle of a no-end sea of salt. Milenary giant cactus cover this island, in contrast with the sorounding landscape.

The Eduardo Avaroa Natural Reserve is full of lakes of different colors… it is curious the colors they have due to the minerals found there. We can found 3 different flamingo species in these lakes (3 out of the 6 that exist worldwide): James’s Flamingo (Phoenicoparrus jamesi), Andean Flamingo (Phoenicoparrus andinus) and Chilean Flamingo (Phoenicopterus chilensis). The nicer and most common ones when we were there were the first ones I mentioned.

In this small area of the world we can also find some samples of volcanic activity: Ollagüe vulcan, Licancabur vulcan and “Sol de Mañana”, a boiling muds area, similar to those I saw in Islandia, among others.

Madidi is totally different. The rainforest is full of life, but it is quite difficult to see it and even much more difficult to take photos of the animals. The woods high and the amount of vegetation are the main reasons. The mammals are scare and run away from the humans (till few years ago, humans hunt them, and nowadays there are still some furtive hunters). At night it is easier to see the small animals: frogs, spyders… specially with the help of a good guide if he knows the sounds of the animals.

I hope you enjoy this photo selection.

New Gallery: Pantanal

From now on you can visit the new gallery about the Pantanal, in Brasil.

Unfortunately we suffered a cold season, longer and stronger than usual for those lands and nearly all animals dissapeared for some days. What should be full of life… was nearly died! Finally the sun came back and the situation changed.

I hope you like this photo selection.
